"The Higher Education Authority welcomes the announcement of the NUI Galway - University of Limerick Strategic Alliance and congratulates the leadership of both universities for this innovative initiative. The joint focus on development in their wider region, the commitment to academic excellence, combined knowledge transfer systems and the overall partnership approach are key, and particularly welcome, elements of the Alliance. If Irish higher education institutions are to compete and prosper in a globalised education and economic system then it is essential that they have the necessary critical mass. Initiatives like this are precisely what our system needs – strong institutions coming together as partners in key academic, research and operational areas to achieve a level of regional, national and international success which neither could achieve on its own. Their students and the wider Irish society and economy will be the ultimate beneficiaries"
Tom Boland, Chief Executive, Higher Education Authority
"This initiative, combined with the US University Partnership, will further strengthen Ireland’s position and reputation as a great place to start and grow global companies. Technology transfer and the commercialisation of research are vital to ensuring that our companies are ready for the opportunities that will come with global recovery and this is a particular focus of the initiative".
Frank Ryan, Chief Executive Officer, Enterprise Ireland
"The Alliance will enhance Ireland’s Research and Development (R&D) value proposition and will add significantly to Ireland’s R&D capability and infrastructure. This unique partnership will enhance the competitiveness of Ireland to attract leading edge industry research particularly from multinational companies. Focus on industry and applied research is integral to this Alliance, bringing together the combined capabilities of Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) with two of Ireland’s most prestigious Universities. GTRI Ireland focuses primarily on applied research collaborations with industry, providing an invaluable support system to the R&D functions of many multinational companies investing in Ireland. IDA welcomes this announcement as the strengthening of links between industry and academia, building on Ireland’s reputation as a leading location for Foreign Direct Investment in the RD&I landscape".
Barry O’Leary, Chief Executive, IDA Ireland
